Gizmo overload
I’ve recently joined the ranks of BlackBerry addicts scrolling through their messages on the train. My employer has helpfully given me a worn, secondhand model 7730 BlackBerry so that I won’t look like a newbie. It’s a pre-Pearl model so has the old thumbwheel rather than a mini-trackball.
I’ve played with a few BlackBerrys before but never had one permanently, so this is the first time I’ve had to confront the issue of how it fits into my life and, more importantly, into my pockets.
Trouble is I have an old Palm Tungsten T3 palmtop that I adore and carry around everywhere, which does all sorts of things the BlackBerry doesn’t. The T3 is a fantastic digital audio recorder for those impromptu interviews, for example, and also runs a copy of TomTom Navigator software (hooking up to a neat little Bluetooth GPS unit), which is handy for those frequent occasions when I’m lost and - being a bloke - couldn’t possibly ask for directions.
I also tend to carry a 60GB video iPod. And a Nokia 6233 phone (helpfully on the Orange network whereas the BlackBerry is on O2, giving two options for coverage).
So I’m running out of pockets, and tend to look permanently pleased to see everyone.
Anyway, it’s clear that I need an amalgamated device. I want a BlackBerry-compatible, GPS-equipped, dual-SIM, iTunes-compliant handset with a high-quality built-in audio recorder and a large colour screen. Is that really too much to ask?
Well, apparently it is.
And people get excited about the iPhone!
